Portuguese Podengo hunting with Goshawk.
The Portuguese Podengo is a little-known hunting breed in America, despite being one of the oldest dog breeds in the world. Records of this dog are known from the ancient Phoenicians in the Mediterranean. In Portugal the Podengo was trained to hunt with the goshawk long before the use of firearms in hunting. There are three sizes of Podengo, the Grande is the largest, the Medio is a medium-sized dog, and the Pequeno being the smallest, growing to about 12 lbs. The photo is of a Pequeno hunting with a goshawk. The Podengo flushes gamebirds and the hawk gives chase. Yes, the hawk does share a little with the dog. There is an old Japanese proverb, “To the hawk goes the meat and to the dog goes the bone.”
