Physical examinations / Pet wellness / Preventative Care

+ Annual medical evaluations allow veterinarians a greater opportunity to discover health issues early before disease becomes severe. Veterinarians can also offer preventative care recommendations based upon your pet’s breed and lifestyle.                                                                                                                                                                                             Senior pet health is especially important as pets age more quickly than humans. Regulars health exams help us to stay ahead of senior health issues.                                                                   Sick and injured pets are important

OFA and PennHip x-rays

+These two different x-ray procedures are preformed to evaluate the health of a dog’s hips. These x-rays help to predict what a dog’s hip heath will likely be,  as he/ she ages, They also help to determine the likelihood to hip dysplasia (malformation of the hip joints) being passed on to future generations should the be used for breeding.

+PennHip hip evaluations were developed at the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School. The PennHIP procedure involves measuring the distraction index (DI), which quantifies hip joint laxity or the degree of hip joint displacement under anesthesia. Additionally, PennHIP evaluates hip joint conformation and provides breed-specific data for comparison. Rottweiler’s x-rays are only compared with other Rottweilers. PennHIP x-rays may be performed in dogs as young as 16 weeks of age, with the philosophy that the degree of distraction in a 4 month old dog will not change as they mature. They believe that the more distraction or looseness in the hip joint, the greater the chance the joint will develop arthritis over time. The University of Pennsylvania believes the PennHip evaluation correlates better with hip health than static views of the hips. Dr. Uli is certified to perform PennHIP x-rays

+OFA x-rays of hips and elbows have been the “gold Standard” for evaluating hip and elbow joint health for the past 50 years. OFA x-rays are preformed under sedation placing the dogs in a specific standardized position of the pelvis and hips. X-rays not meeting positional or technique standards will not be reviewed. The shape of the entire hip joint is evaluated by veterinary radiologists, looking at nine different parameters including depth and smoothness of the hip socket and how deeply the femoral head is seated into the socket.  OFA x-rays can be performed in dogs less than 2 years of age to provide preliminary information for breeding purposes. However, actual grading of the hips and OFA certification cannot be done until dogs are at least 24 months of age. There are 7 different grades assigned by OFA, with only the top three receiving an OFA number approving them as normal and suitable for breeding.
